Perched with unshakable poise, the great horned owl mother kept silent vigil over her three young. Taken in May 2023 on the east side of Ennis Lake, Montana, this portrait captures the unwavering intensity in her gaze—equal parts protector and teacher. For days, I returned to watch her guard the downed tree where her owlets learned to test their wings, her presence a constant reminder that even in the wild, love often takes the form of watchfulness.
